Kunnian Miehiä

Right now canal 5 in Finland is showing a movie called A few good men. The title is translated into Finnish as Kunnian Miehiä. What's interesting about that?
It caught my eyes because in Persian the title means something like "A Few Male prostitutes".

Day 191: Täydennä teksti sanoilla

Täydennä teksti sanoilla!

On day 191 of my Finnish learning journey I only did an exercise from this "Kuulosta Hyvältä: sounds good" book. It was a fill in the black type of exercise in unit 4 of the book, pages 32 and 33. Read on...

Book: Kuulostaa hyvältä Sounds Good

If you already know how to say hello in Finnish, how to read the alphabet  and want to improve your Finnish from that point, this is the book for you. I started reading this book after I read about 7 lessons of "Teach Yourself Finnish" and I'm still reading.
It has 40 lessons of about 5 pages each. Every lesson starts with a short conversation then there are exercises by which you can make sense of what you have read. The answers to the exercises are provided so the book is great for self study.
There are also companion videos for the conversations which are available on youtube.

Day 190: Kieli Käyttöön, Koiranpentu

Koiranpentu

Today I started at the end of kappale 1 of Kieli Käyttöön and moved through the beginning pages of kappale 2. I like this book. It has many examples. Here are the Finnish words and phrases I learned today.
My favorite word for today was koiranpentu, a puppy.

Why I started learning Finnish and how?

It all started with our decision (my wife and I) to move to Finland to continue our studies in English Language and Culture. When we were done with the hard parts (finding the school, applying, getting accepted, applying for visas etc etc, and we were still in Iran, I started to think about learning Finnish.
I knew most Finns speak English and we won't have serious problems but for the long run, staying in a country without understanding what people in there are saying was not acceptable to me.
So on Jun 20, 2012 I started to work on it. First thing was knowing the available online resources. There are many websites out there to help you learn Finnish. You can find all the online resourses in another post of mine: Websites for learning Finnish.
