Here is a summary of different ways I've tried to learn Finnish! It gets updated once in a while.
20 June 2012 : Day 1
I realized I had to learn this language. I started by looking through online resources to see how the language was like.
2? June 2012 to 1 September 2012 : Day 1 to Day 104
I realized that I had to stick to a book. I found "Teach yourself Finnish" with CD a good starting point.
I went through the lessons and also practiced using the recordings on the book's CD. I guess I did about half the book. It was a good start actually.
I tried to do something to memorize the new vocabulary I encountered in the book. I tried Flash cards, both on paper and in computer. I
read about 10 lessons from Teach Yourself Finnish and did the exercises.
It helped me with the alphabet, numbers, some basic words and grammar.
It saved us a few time when we arrived in Finland and it felt good. Though I
didn’t learn everything that I read in that book. Because I was skimming
the book mostly with small time for each lesson. I used flash cards,
both on paper and on computer.
1 September 2012 to 15 November 2012: Day 104 - 179
Here
I have been to a finnish class at school twice a week, 2 hours each
time, since mid september. These days I can recognize some words in
written language, and can guess a bit more of them. Though I’m not happy
with the speed that I’m learning.
15 Nov 2012 to 26 nov
Since
yesterday or the day before, I decided to find a Finnish pen pal and
start writing emails each day. Simo from the school’s language cafe’
volunteered for that.
Day 208:
I decided to use a Finnish - Finnish dictionary instead of my Finnish - English dictionary.
